I know- I should review the pizza from a pizzeria. Some of you will leave this review, scratching your head, thinking, “But- how’s the pizza?!?” However, the reason Broadlands Brickoven Pizzeria has seen my $green$ three times in the past 3 weeks (playoffs, baby! Go GIANTS!) has not been primarily for their pizza. Don’t get me wrong- it’s a good pie- crisp crust and wonderful cheese, excellent cold at 10am the next day. But come Sunday- Giants vs. Packers- when Broadlands Brickoven Pizzeria gets the call, it will be for Wings and Fries!

I love fried food- blame my mother’s down home cooking with the inevitable can of Crisco filled with bacon grease in the middle of the stove. But I’ve never been a huge wing fan because I hate soft, fatty chicken skin, or breading to increase the already high fat content. But I like them well enough during a sporting event when they are done juuust right. So when we went all out on a saturated fat-cholesterol binge for the Giants/Patriots game (never MIND the score) and ordered a pie, wings and fries fries, I enjoyed the pizza, but was blown away by the wings!

Imagine miniature-izing your mom’s crispy homemade fried chicken (ok- MY mom’s if your mom can’t fry chicken!) and adding liberal amounts of buffalo wing spices that saturate the meat as well as the small amount of crunchy skin. Throw in some excellent chunky bleu cheese dip or ranch dressing- and you have some mighty fine wings. No messy sauce to stain your clothes, yet you have all the flavor you find in traditional wings. Never has a bone been cleaner on my nine year old’s plate!  The fries are seasoned & crisp- the perfect complement to a comfort fun-food feast! The generous portions mean 1 order feeds 2 french fry fiends. Try the lightly breaded & fried zucchini as well- it comes with a pretty decent (yet indescribable) dipping sauce- only a touch of horseradish could make this sauce better.

Broadlands Brickoven Pizzeria does a wonderful job of serving up fried foods without leaving your fingers too greasy, and your belly feeling loaded down. I don’t know if it’s a higher quality of grease, a better system of draining the wings, fries and zucchini, or higher quality ingredients. But the guilt is delayed because you don’t feel  like you just ate the opposite of health food.

They have an extensive menu of subs, salads, soups and pasta- and I DO plan to try them all and review them as well. I hear wonderful raves about their other items from my neighbors. But today- all I know is, as a bona fide fried food junkie, Broadlands Brickoven Pizzeria satisfies my fix and exceeds expectations with their wings and fries. GO GIANTS!!!!
